Overcome barrier with technology: Supporting Mobility Impairment Mini-exhibition

As we age and our bodies deteriorate, common age-related conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, sarcopenia, arthritis and traumatic brain injury will become more prevalent, impairing and affecting the mobility and self-care ability of the elderly. Luckily for us, though, as technology makes great strides, an increasing number of mobility and Activity of Daily Living (ADL) assistive equipment is available to seniors so they can live independently and continue doing what they love daily. Jockey Club "age at home" Gerontech Education and Rental Service (Jockey Club "age at home") is currently holding the mini-exhibition "Overcome barrier with technology: Supporting Mobility Impairment". We welcome the elderly and their carers to join us for a comprehensive glimpse of the latest mobility and ADL assistive equipment to create an age-friendly home for all!

There are five levels of mobility impairment: supervision, basic assistance, intermediate assistance, high dependency and bedridden. The exhibition is curated according to these levels and identifies the most suitable mobility and ADL equipment for each group. The viewers will have a thorough overview of our offerings to make the best decisions based on their needs.

The ADL equipment shown in this exhibition is versatile and all-encompassing, including the world's first wearable peripheral electrical stimulation device. The exclusive technology sends electrical signals to the muscles to release tension and stimulate the weakened tissues. Stroke patients and those with neurological disorders can regain some of their mobility and balancing power when wearing the device. Another piece of equipment on show is the portable hair washing machine that enables the elderly to sit up on their beds, chairs or wheelchairs and have their hair washed without wetting their bodies. They can also wash their bodies by switching to another shower head so that bedridden seniors can stay on top of their hygiene.

Various workshops are available throughout the exhibition for the elderly and their carers to learn about different ADL equipment. Our "Parkinson's disease" and "Stroke" workshops introduced the rapid cognitive assessment for Parkinson's disease patients and ADL equipment for stroke patients. Since joining Jockey Club "age at home" in 2020, I've spent two and a half years working with the elderly and people with special education needs — something I hold incredibly close to heart. I'm so glad I can serve two groups of people simultaneously and contribute to the future liveability of the elderly in Hong Kong.

I'm primarily based at the Gerontech Cleaning and Maintenance Service Centre. My tasks include overseeing the cleaning process of the gerontech equipment, catering to the needs of the trainees with special education needs, and conduct guided tours. Before I started here, I was trained for 72 hours alongside other Care Equipment Counsellor to understand the basic knowledge of elderly care, different types of gerontech equipment and their essential cleaning process. Whenever a new product is available for rental, we'll have to meet with the supplier first to understand the structures of the product and ensure the safety of our users, the durability of the equipment, and avoid any cleaning damage. Take the wheelchair as an example: it combines an assortment of materials that require meticulous dismantling and cleaning with numerous machines. For instance, when cleaning the cushion, we cannot use the dryer as we do for the other parts because over-stripping its moisture may destroy its structure.

After we've devised the work flow procedures, we'll pass on the task to our operations staff, which includes three special education needs trainees. They'll start with basic cleaning that follows our standard protocol as we walk through the process step-by-step with them. When the centre is less busy, they'll even help with tours or administrative work in the office to familiarise themselves with the workplace.

Besides, I often conduct guided tours online or on-site. Many of our participants are from elderly care homes or service centres that require cleaning their gerontech equipment and would like to understand the process better. They're most concerned about the time needed and process efficiency. Our tours not only give an overview of the cleaning and maintenance process of the gerontech equipment, but they also give me insights into the elderly's quality of life in Hong Kong.

It was a real challenge when I first joined as a Care Equipment Counsellor , as it was a one-of-its-kind opportunity in Hong Kong's labour scene. But I'm glad I took this step to provide better services for the elderly and their carers. I believe that gerontech can serve and provide a better living environment for them. I'm also happy for this safe space for our trainees to pick up different skills and show their abilities and potentials.

A carefree assisted journey

The Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) took place successfully from 2 to 5 November, 2022. Jockey Club "age at home" had staged at the Mobility Aids Experience Zone inspired by urban design. We presented each section as part of the city and designed interactive games to help people understand the cleaning process of their assistive equipment. The display area reminded our visitors of different considerations when picking out mobility aids and provided various equipment for trial. Daily scenarios were presented in the exhibition, i.e. taking the taxi, bus, train and elevator, where the visitors experienced various assistive equipment and the benefits they add to the daily routines of the elderly and the community.

Foldable electric wheelchair for easy independent travelling

Of all the assistive equipment shown in GIES, the foldable power wheelchair is readily available at Jockey Club "age at home”. For the utmost user convenience, the wheelchair is extremely lightweight and comes with a controller that can be used single-handedly. Its instant foldability means that it'll expand and collapse within two seconds and can be transported on and off cars easily; its second patented design is the foldable pedals so that the user may slide into and leave the wheelchair anytime at ease. The wheelchair has received accolades from Germany's Red Dot Design Award and Japan's G-Mark Design Award.
