Level 3: (includes electric wheelchairs, hoists, etc.): Requires assessment by occupational or physical therapists and at least one session of professional training.

Hello everyone, I’m Ms. Chan. I would like to share our personal experience using the Jockey Club “age at home” Gerontech Rental Service.
In April 2024, my sister was involved in a car accident which resulted in fractures to her arm and lower back. She was hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for about a month and had to take time off work to recover. During her stay, she was unable to bathe, had to remain in bed most of the time and wore a back brace. She experienced severe pain whenever pressure was applied to the fracture area, and due to internal bleeding, she had to consume liquid food in controlled amounts and use adult diapers daily. As she wasn't used to hospital life and had to stay in bed for extended periods, she felt low and eager to return home as soon as possible. However, our home lacked Gerontech equipment, and neither my mother nor I had any caregiving experience. We were very worried about not being able to take care of her and felt stressed. Her path to recovery at home seemed full of hurdles.
Fortunately, our friend suggested that we can contact “age at home” for assistance. After understanding my sister’s condition and reviewing the photos of our home, the staff from the rental service team patiently explained the rental process, fees, and recommended suitable equipment to us. They also guided me on how to take measurements at home to ensure the equipment would fit. Within a week, all the equipment was delivered to our home. Staff members also came to teach us how to use the equipment and followed up by phone calls to keep checking. The service was very considerate, both to the user and the caregivers.
We rented various equipment from “age at home” to improve my sister’s quality of life. Foldable hospital bed had adjustable height, making it easier for us to feed her and change her diapers without having to bend over for long periods, reducing the risk of injury. Since my sister was bedridden and unable to turn over, mattress with special functions helped reduce her risk of developing bedsores. As she needed to attend regular hospital check-ups that often lasted several hours, wheelchair with special function (recliner and tilt-in-space in one) allowed her to lie back comfortably, relieving pressure from her injured back and reducing her pain. Adjustable transit wheelchair was also very convenient for my mother to take her out for fresh air. Additionally, since both my mother and I had to assist her with bathing and our bathroom was small, rotatory shower chair made it much easier to clean her body.
We are incredibly grateful for the equipment rental service provided by “age at home.” It helped my sister to be discharged earlier and return home, reducing her discomfort during home recovery and easing the pressure on us. The rental service also eased our financial pressure and saved us the trouble of storing or disposing of the equipment after my sister recovered.
The professional team from “age at home” regularly followed up on my sister’s recovery progress and offered us updated recommendations for suitable equipment. Their service was thoughtful and professional. Now that my sister has made a good recovery, we have returned all the equipment and she has resumed work fully, only needing regular check-ups at the hospital. We highly recommend “age at home” rental service to individuals who have just been discharged from the hospital or are in need of rehabilitation. Whether the need is long-term or short-term, “age at home” rental service can cater to all needs.
People with mobility impairments often face daily difficulties in traveling and transferring. In addition to physical limitations, prolonged bed rest and limited participation in activities can also have a negative impact on their mental health and social life.
To address these issues, the Jockey Club “age at home” Gerontech Education and Rental Service Centre is hosting the “Gerontechnology, Accompany You Along the Way” mini exhibition. Through a series of interactive activities themed around support for people with mobility impairments and their caregivers, the exhibition aims to deepen public understanding of their challenges and raise awareness of how gerontechnology can help improve their quality of life.
Visitors can experience hands-on power wheelchair simulations to understand the operation and training involved, gaining deeper empathy and insight into the real needs of mobility-impaired individuals.
Visitors can join the “Gerontechnology Matching Game” and “Treasure Hunt Game” to learn how to select the suitable equipment and collect stamps to redeem a souvenir.
Follow the hints on the map to locate various gerontechnology devices. Collect stamps and receive a complimentary souvenir as reward.
A special area where visitors can draw motivational notes from a capsule machine and post them on a giant wall of encouragement—or keep them as a personal memento.
Visitors can sit and watch two mini videos documenting the challenges of the people with mobility difficulties and their carers. The videos will illustrate how their conditions are improved with gerontechnology.
The exhibition also displays various assistive products that support traveling and transferring, such as foldable wheelchair, portable backrest seat, easy glide transfer board and portable bedrail.
