With all kinds of professional services, elder and carers can achieve "Smart Ageing in Place"

Gerontech education makes a better home for elders

This January and February, Jockey Club “age at home” Gerontech Education and Rental Service (Jockey Club “age at home”) is partnering up with the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong to host the “Gerontech from Canada” exhibition. The exhibition features the latest gerontech equipment which are shown for the first time in Hong Kong, including the world's first blind spot sensor for wheelchairs, patented cushions for seating and standing which help to improve user’s posture as well as absorbing shocks to reduce the impact of falling, braces for foot drop following a stroke or nervous system damage, and an oral motor rehabilitation exercise programme designed for those with difficulties in swallowing. You’re welcome to visit the exhibition at our centre and discover ways to create a better living environment for the elderly! (*By appointment only until further announcement.)

A virtual tour is also available online, click here for a visit.

Apart from this special exhibition, what more can you find at our education centre? First of all, do you know what’s the most common remark we hear when elders or their carers visit? “There are so many aids available!” — and life would be so much easier for the elderly or their carers who want the best for the elders but didn’t know where to start. In this issue of “age at home” eNewsletter, we’ll introduce our education centre in detail, starting with our guided tours, interactive workshops, training programmes and professional consultation services (both on-site and online) to raise awareness of gerontechnology. As more people learn about gerontechnology, we hope we can all work towards the goal of “Smart Ageing in Place” and improve the quality of life for our elders.

The Jockey Club “age at home” Gerontech Education and Rental Service Centre is located in Shatin, featuring more than 150 types of equipment. These daily living aids are distributed across our demo home areas, i.e. bathroom, bedroom, living room and kitchen, for elders, their carers and the public to gain hands-on experience on gerontechnology. For those who’d like to learn more, you are invited to join our interactive workshop and training programme. Our workshops are divided into two categories — the first one is hosted by an occupational therapist who provides training on gerontech equipment and their daily applications; the second type is hosted by a registered nurse who focuses on physical functions and how gerontechnology can lift the spirits of the elderly. The “Care Equipment Counsellor Training Programme” is designed for everyone who might be interested in gerontechnology and covers areas in education, rental, cleaning and maintenance services. Group bookings are welcome, please sign up here. (*Special arrangement will be applied because of the pandemic situation, please contact us first for details.)

Our centre also offers occupational therapy service for those 60 or above with physical disabilities affecting their everyday lives. Our occupational therapists will assess the elderly based on their individual needs, health, functioning ability, daily self-care ability and environmental factors before recommending different gerontech equipment to elevate their lives. Social Worker
Ringo Chau

As a social worker at Jockey Club “age at home”, I always communicate with elders and their carers. My goal is to improve the lives of our seniors through gerontechnology regardless of their backgrounds. Beyond that, my role is to match our elders' needs with different gerontech equipment through deep listening and shared rapport to build up my team of professional occupational therapists and Care Equipment Counsellors to provide the best care for the elderly.

In my experience, our seniors usually have many questions, but the ones that concern them most are the rental fees of the gerontech equipment instead of the technology itself. We often get case referrals of elderly who live alone or doubleton elderly families. They might be financially vulnerable, and it is often our role to reassure them and make sure they receive optimal support despite their condition. Our rental service also offers a tiered fee structure that takes into account the financial status of our elderly and ensure that our rental fee is well within their comfort zones. Besides, our monthly payment plan also allows our seniors to try our products before committing to the right gerontech equipment to avoid wasting money.

Sometimes our seniors don't even know what they need, and that's why we need to be extra attentive to their needs. I once helped a woman in her 60s whose primary carer was her older husband. The wife had a stroke that affected her mobility, and her husband came to us wanting to rent an electric bed for her. When we did our home visit, we found out that though only two of them were in the household, they had two inconvenient pieces of furniture — a double bed and a bunk bed. Not only were the furniture bulky, they also posed a risk to safety. We then recommended that they dismantle the bunk bed to make room for the electric bed, but the husband was reluctant. And after a lengthy conversation, we finally found out the reason behind it — he was worried he couldn't handle the dismantlement on his own. After the truth came out, we finally knew how to help him and his wife by providing an electric bed that makes life easier for them both.

Please don’t hold back your questions. Come to us with your problems, and we’ll always have something for you at Jockey Club “age at home”!
